U-Prep 101

Practical Guidelines for College Preparation

Why U-Prep 101?

Over the last three years, I’ve been asked several times why I developed U-Prep 101.  Below is my best attempt at an answer:

I attended a small Christian high school in Indiana.  In fact, my graduating class totaled 12.  Often schools this size do not have the luxury of offering  guidance office to their students.  Often, students enrolled at these schools would get a late start on planning and preparing for college.

My father is a pastor in Indiana and has worked with the high school youth group for  over 25 years.  Shortly after I began my first job in admissions, I would occasionally get calls from Dad soliciting feedback on issues like college choice and financial aid.  As an influencer, it was natural for the students in the youth group to approach him and ask for advice.  As one could imagine, he didn’t feel completely confident in his ability to answer all of their questions…even though he had helped three of his own kids through the college search and selection process.

During those telephone calls with my father, the idea of U-Prep 101 was born.  What if I could offer a clear and concise presentation of the most frequently asked questions by parents and students in the college search and selection process? What if the financial aid portion of the presentation wasn’t one that would bore people to tears? Would students and parents benefit from such a presentation?

I began to formulate an outline and in the fall of 2007, I presented my first U-Prep 101 seminar to Faith Missionary Church in Indianapolis, IN.  Over the past three years, I have presented U-Prep 101 to over 30 different churches, schools, and home school groups.  It has been presented in 9 states to approximately 800 individuals.  The feedback has been extremely positive and I truly believe it is very much due to the fact that this information is vital and pertinent to the families that attend.

If your school, church, or home school organization would be interested in hosting a free U-Prep 101 college planning seminar, please follow the link below.  While I can’t promise your student will be accepted to every college they apply to and receive a full-ride scholarship, I can promise that after this presentation, you will be better equipped to navigate the waters of college search and selection.

I look forward to seeing you at a seminar in the near future.
